The 2nd Zero-waste City High Level Forum was Successfully Held Online

The fourth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly, in its Resolution 4/7, invites Member States, taking into consideration their differing national circumstances, and in cooperation with relevant national, regional and international organizations, to support innovative waste management initiatives, such as national and local “zero waste” initiatives in some countries to minimize waste and develop adequate infrastructure and other facilities for waste management. Under this background, on June 30th , 2020, the Zero Waste High Level Forum was held online during the 15th International Conference on Waste Management and Technology (ICWMT 15). At the forum, 8 cities/administrative regions exchange their experience on zero-waste city construction, including Melbourne City, Wellington City, Oslo, Minamata City, Beijing Economic-technological Development Area, Tianjin Eco-city Administrative, and Sanya City in China. Advance solid waste management solutions were presented by city representatives on industrial solid waste, municipal solid waste, plastic reduction action, and urban development. At the forum, BCRC China delivered the Declaration on Promoting Zero-waste City Construction.As proposed in the declaration, an International City Network for the Zero-waste Initiative will be organized in order to strengthen cooperation among cities for communicating experiences, gaining consensus and promoting cooperation between stakeholders. In order to promote the construction of zero-waste cities at the international level, exchange information on advanced experience of solid waste management, the 2 nd Zero-waste City High Level Forum was held by BCRC China online, back-to-back with the Sixteenth International Conference on Waste Management and Technology (ICWMT16). Representatives from waste management departments in 5 cities and 1 non-profit organization attended the forum, including Victoria in Canada, Vienna in Austria, Auckland in New Zealand, Baotou and Xuzhou in China, as well as Zero Waste Canada. Other important representatives are Professor Mustafa Ahmed, Director of the Basel Convention Regional Centre for Training and Technology Transfer in Arab Countries, Mr. Mehdi Sameni, Director of BCRC Iran, Mr. Hossein Snahbaz, Senior Consultant of BCRC Iran, Mr. Mostafa Mehrdad, scientific expert at Department of the Environment of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ms. Executive Director, Ms.ZHAO Nana, Assistant Director, and Dr. SHAN Guijuan, senior programme officer. The concept and experience of Zero-waste City construction was exchanged between cities and experts through the forum. In total, 82 representatives participated the forum via zoom.
