Project name:Global Best Practices on Emerging Chemical Policy Issues of Concern under the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management
Project duration:05 /03 /2020 to 30/11/2021
Project Introduction:
The project involved review of standards and regulations, test of toy samples, development of training materials and a training for companies. Policies, standards and regulations that control chemicals in toys in the EU, US, China and some other developing countries were reviewed and compared in two reports. Over 200 toys samples were purchased in store and on-line in China and the presence and content of chemicals of concern, such as Cr, Pb and DBP, in these samples were tested. The results were summarised in a report. To raise-awareness of using chemicals properly among producers and traders, a video and an interactive booklet was prepared to introduce requirements and standards for chemicals in toys in major markets such as EU, US and China. Based on the above activities and in cooperation with the USETox team, a training was held to promote better practice of chemical management in producers, including an introductory guidance of applying the USETox Toy tool.
Main outcomes:
Output 1: New tools and guidance to reduce the use of chemicals of concern (CoC) in the toys sectors—Report on chemical concentrations in toys and regulatory compliance in China;
Output 2: Training and support for government and value chain actors to trial and adopt new guidance and tools, inviting at least 50 toy producers and 50 representatives from Chinese enforcement agency, and associations participate in the training.
