Release time:2023-05-09

The Indiana General Assembly has passed Senate Bill 472 (Advanced Recycling). This bill defines "advanced recycling" as a manufacturing process that converts post-use polymers and recovered feedstocks into basic raw materials, feedstocks, chemicals, and other products. It also provides explanations for "advanced recycling facility" and related provisions for advanced recycling. Advanced recycling is a manufacturing process that utilizes chemistry to enable the recycling of a significantly greater amount of plastics compared to traditional recycling technologies. This includes often hard-to-recycle films and mixed plastics. Instead of disposing of these valuable plastics in landfills or incinerating them for energy, advanced recycling technologies allow recyclers to convert used plastics back into raw materials. These raw materials can then be used to produce new plastics and chemical products that are equivalent in quality to virgin materials, without the need for burning the plastic material.
