UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen Visited Tsinghua University and Appreciated BCRC China

On the afternoon of October 31, 2019, the Deputy Secretary-General of United Nations and also the Executive Director of United Nations Environment Programme, Inger Andersen, visited Tsinghua University. Qiu Yong, President of Tsinghua University, met with the guests. The two sides conducted in-depth discussions and exchanges on the current progress of cooperation and the direction of follow-upcooperation.
Inger Andersen expressed her gratitude to Tsinghua University for its research and efforts in the field of environmental science and technology. She specifically mentioned that UNEP and Tsinghua University have cooperated well in climate change and other aspects. It is honored to set up the Basel Convention Regional Center for Training and Technology Transfer for Asia and Pacific Region in Tsinghua University. Inger Andersen stressed that global warming and hunger are two major problems facing humanity. Tsinghua University has carried out fruitful work in the education of young people on green development, environmental protection and governance.The work of UNEP focuses on environmental policies.The two sides have established close cooperative relations in air pollution control, and hope to have more cooperation in multiple fields. Lu Xinming, deputy director of the Climate Department of Ministry of Ecology and Environment, on behalf of China’s Special Representative for Climate Change and Dean of the Institute for Climate Change and Sustainable Development Xie Zhenhua, attended the forum and communicated with the guests. In addition, Inger Andersen gave a speech entitled “ Climate Action and Sustainable Development”tothe students of the Global Environment International Class of Tsinghua University.
