On March 9th, Thailand accepted the amendment to the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and Their Disposal (referred to as the "amendment" below), which came into effect on June 7th. On March 22nd, Brazil accepted the amendment, and it became effective on June 20th. The core content of the amendment is the prohibition for Annex VII countries (which include members of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, European Community member states, and other countries such as Liechtenstein) to engage in transboundary movements of hazardous wastes destined for final disposal to non-Annex VII countries. The amendment was adopted in 1995. On December 5th, 2019, the amendment officially entered into force, and it has been accepted by a total of 103 contracting parties to date.
