BCRC China Presented the Progress of the Project “Capacity Building on Environmentally Sound Management of Single-use Plastic and its Waste in Asia-pacific Countries” on Annual Joint Meeting of the Regional Centres

 From 7-9 November, 2022, the annual joint meeting to enhance cooperation and coordination between the regional centres under the Basel and Stockholm conventions was organized by the Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions in Geneva, Switzerland. Basel Convention Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific/ Stockholm Convention Regional Centre for Capacity-building and the Transfer of Technology in Asia and the Pacific (BCRC/SCRC China) participated in the meeting with other regional centres around the world.
On 7 November, on behalf of BCRC/SCRC China, Ms. Mei-Ion Wong introduced the status of the project “capacity building on environmentally sound management of single-use plastic and its waste in Asia-pacific countries” under the agenda item “updates on the implementation of projects under the SGP on plastic waste”. The overall progress of the project as well as the progress in the three partner countries, namely Cambodia, Myanmar and Sri Lanka, were presented, after which questions from the audience were taken. The project activities involve review of single-use plastics (SUPs) control policies, baseline study on typical SUPs consumed in participating countries, public survey on existing or potential control policies, life-cycle assessment (LCA) for major SUPs of concern, and to propose policy recommendations for the participating countries and a regional strategy of SUPs and plastic waste management for the Asia-pacific region.
