Sino-Norwegian cooperation project on capacity building for reducing plastic and microplastic pollution (SINOPLAST) was proposed by Ministry of Ecology and Environment of PRC (Department of International Cooperation), jointly with Norwegian Institute for Water Research, and Basel and Stockholm Convention Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific (BCRC China/SCRCAP) as the execution organization. The project aims at strengthening China’s prevention and control of plastic waste and microplastic pollution. The project consists of a range of research activities including source identification, environmental impact assessment and fate analysis, development of pollution monitoring techniques and tools, policy studies and awareness enhancement. SINOPLAST is expected to provide policy and technical support for Sino-Norway bilateral environmental cooperation and China’s plastic waste management. The project period is from January 2019 to December 2022. Other Chinese partners of the project include Solid Waste and Chemicals Management Centre, Ministry of Ecology and Environment, People's Republic of China (SCC), National Marine Environment Monitoring Centre (NMEMC) and State Key Laboratory of Estuarine and Coastal Research of East China Normal University (ECNU). The Norwegian partners are Norwegian Environment Agency (NEA) and Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA). The project outcomes are planned to be: 1.Baseline for litter, plastic waste and microplastics established for China 2.Environmental monitoring capacity of litter and microplastics improved 3.Reduced amount of litter and plastics in selected catchments 4.A management tool for plastic measures, transport and fate developed 5.Cost-benefit and societal impacts analysis carried out for a suite of identified measures 6.Increased capacity and awareness on plastic waste and pollution in China
