Online briefings on the nineteenth meetings of the Chemical Review Committee (CRC) of the Rotterdam Convention and the Persistent Organic Pollutants Review Committee (POPRC) of the Stockholm Convention

Objectives
The online briefings will provide an overview of the issues that will be considered by the nineteenth meetings of the CRC and POPRC, to be held respectively from 3 to 6 October 2023 and from 9 to 13 October 2022, in Rome, Italy.

Background
The nineteenth meeting of the Chemical Review Committee of the Rotterdam Convention (CRC-19) will be held from 3 to 6 October 2023 at the FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy. At its nineteenth meeting, the Committee will consider draft decision guidance documents for methyl bromide and paraquat.
 
Additionally, in line with the procedures for banned or severely restricted chemicals (Article 5, paragraphs 5 and 6), the Committee will review notifications of final regulatory action for the following chemicals, in accordance with the criteria set out in Annex II to the Convention:
 
  • Diarsenic pentaoxide (also referred to as arsenic pentoxide (CAS No. 1303-28-2))
  • Bromacil
  • Chlorpyrifos
  • Ethion
  • Mercury
The nineteenth meeting of the Persistent Organic Pollutants Review Committee (POPRC-19) will be held at the same venue as CRC-19 from 9 to 13 October 2023. At its nineteenth meeting, the Committee will consider, among other things, the following items:
  • Draft risk profile for chlorpyrifos
  • Draft risk management evaluation for chlorinated paraffins with carbon chain lengths in the range C14-17 and chlorination levels at or exceeding 45 per cent chlorine by weight
  • Draft risk management evaluation for long-chain perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs), their salts and related compounds
  • Draft document on long-range environmental transport
  • Persistent organic pollutants in stockpiles, products and articles in use, and in waste
  • Indicative list of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), its salts and PFOA-related compounds
  • Indicative list of perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS), its salts and PFHxS-related compounds.

CRC and POPRC members and observers, Rotterdam Convention designated national authorities, Stockholm Convention national focal points, Stockholm and Rotterdam conventions official contact points, permanent missions and interested stakeholders.
