BCRC China Attended the Twelfth Meeting of the Open-ended Working Group of the Basel Convention

From April 4-6, 2022, the face-to-face segment of the 12th meeting of the Open-ended Working Group (OEWG-12) of the Basel Convention was held in Nairobi, Kenya. The meeting also opened for online participation to accommodate to the Covid-19 condition. Ms. Zhao Nana, Assistant Director the Basel Convention Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific/Stockholm Convention Regional Centre for Capacity Building and the Transfer of Technology in Asia and the Pacific (BCRC China/SCRCAP), Mr. Dong Qingyin, Chief of the Regional Waste Management Branch, and Mr. Tan Quanyin, Chief of the General Office, BCRC China/SCRCAP, attended the meetings online as members of the Chinese delegation. Seven staff members of BCRC China/SCRCAP and students from the Global Environmental Programme of School of Environment, Tsinghua University attended the meeting as observers.

The face-to-face segment of OEWG-12 mainly reviewed the following four aspects: (1) strategic issues, including the strategic framework of Basel Convention and development of guidelines for environmentally sound management; (2) scientific and technical matters, including technical guidelines, national reporting and actions on plastic waste; (3) legal, governance and enforcement matters; and (4) international cooperation and coordination, i.e. Basel Convention Partnership Programme. Following three days of discussion in plenary sessions and contact groups, OEWG-12 determined matters to be submitted for decision on the fifteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 15) of Basel Convention.
