The Regional Trade Symposium on Promotion of Technical Assistance and Technology Transfer in Asia and the Pacific was held in Shanghai, China on October 24, 2013. Totally 45participants, including 8 delegates from 7 different Asian countries--Cambodia, Cook Islands, DPR Korea, Mongolia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam, 29 delegates from industry and the academic circles, and 8 delegates from Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions, Basel Convention Regional Centre for South-East Asia, Basel Convention Regional Centre in Tehran, and Basel Convention Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific/Stockholm Convention Regional Centre for Capacity-building and the Transfer of Technology in Asia and the Pacific (BCRC Beijing/SCRCAP) attended the meeting.

Mr. Nelson Sabogal, Senior Program Officer of Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions, and Prof. Li Jinhui, Executive Director of BCRC Beijing/SCRCAP, attended the opening session and gave welcome addresses and warmly welcomed the participants. During the Symposium, representative from SCRCAP reviewed the background and objectives of the workshop, delegates from regional countries introduced the technology and facility needs and priorities of chemical and waste management in each country, and enterprise delegates also gave presentations on technology and facility introduction of each company. Discussions of Platform on Technical Assistance and Technology Transfer of Chemical and Hazardous Wastes Management and Disposal was also organized.

Followed, delegates from 3 countries and 7 enterprises signed the Terms of Reference of Platform on Technical Assistance and Technology Transfer of Chemical and Hazardous Wastes Management and Disposal. The 3 countries are Mongolia, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. And the 7 enterprises are Huaxin Green Spring Environmental Protection Group Co., Ltd., Loyalty Equipment-Making (Sichuan) Co., Ltd., New World Environmental Services Group, CSD IDEA (Beijing) Institute of Environmental Innovation Co., Ltd., Easy Business Digital Technology Co., Ltd., Idea (China) Consultants, INC., and Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, Shanxi Province.

The Regional Trade Symposium was held during the 8th International Conference on Waste Management and Technology, under the framework of Small Grant Programme “Promotion of technical assistance and technology transfer in Asia and the Pacific”, which funded by the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions. The project aims to strengthen the experiences exchange in chemical and waste management, analysis and treatment, establish relationship between different countries and enterprises, and promote region technical assistance and technology transfer. Through the Symposium, BCRC Beijing/SCRCAP initiates and establishes Public Private Partnership for Chemical and Hazardous Wastes Technical Assistance and Technology Transfer, builds the Platform on Technical Assistance and Technology Transfer of Chemical and Hazardous Wastes Management and Disposal by coordinating regional Parties and enterprises, and hopes to promote the implementation of Basel Convention and Stockholm Convention in the region.
