Reducing Waste Generation of Malaysia

National strategies/policies

Promotion of the Malaysian Agenda for Waste Reduction (MAWAR) to encourage industries to minimize the generation of waste; and promotion of cleaner production.

High priority will be given to technology transfer and research and development projects in environmental technology to encourage technical innovation and national competitiveness in key area such as waste minimization, recycling, recovery , treatment and safe disposal, new method of tackling pollution in priority areas and the development of control measures for the prevention and abatement of pollution.

Legislation, regulations and guidelines

Environmental Quality (Scheduled Wastes) Regulations 2005, stipulated under Environmental Quality Act 1974.

Economic instruments/ initiatives

Special capital allowance incentive to companies which generate wastes and intend to set up facilities to treat their own wastes covering all capital expenditure incurred.

Malaysia Investment Development Authority provides incentives for Environmental Management that encompasses : (a) Incentives for the Storage, treatment and Disposal of Toxic and Hazardous Waste (b) Incentives for Waste Recycling Activities (c) Incentives for Energy Conservation (d) Incentive for Energy Generation Activities Using Renewable Energy Resources (e) Incentives for Generation of Renewable Energy for own consumption (f) Tax incentive for Building Obtaining Green Building Index Certificate (g) Accelerated Capital Allowance for Environmental Management.

Cleaner production, waste minimization and ISO 14001 certification.
