Integrating Sustainable Education and Responsible Consumption Practices into achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

Time:

Address:

Agenda 21 at the UN Conference on Environment & Development held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 identified a roadmap for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), acknowledging environmental education as a fundamental element. Furthermore, ESD is well recognized in almost every goal in SDGs, and it plays a dynamic role in achieving the 2030 Agenda. ESD plays a pivotal role in promoting changes towards more sustainable and circular economies by integrating sustainability principles into education curricula, policies, and practices in sustainable waste management systems. ESD and circular economy are interconnected concepts that share the common goal of fostering sustainability and tackling environmental issues. Both SDG 4 (Quality education) and SDG 12 (Responsible consumption and production) emphasize their mutual goals of promoting sustainability and advancing strategies and technologies to addressing social, economic, and environmental challenges. The purpose of this session is to establish an environment for the exchange of knowledge and to discuss exemplary methods in resource efficiency and circular economy across various waste streams. This session emphasizes the importance of education for sustainability among policymakers, universities, institutes, and business sectors. This session further aims to create a worldwide network that focuses on infrastructure and services to promote education in sustainable development and resource efficiency for eco-friendly solutions and encourages knowledge exchange.
