On October 17-18, 2024, the International Workshop on Plastic Pollution Control was successfully held in Haikou City, Hainan Province. The workshop was co-organized by the Institute of Energy and the Basel Convention Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific (hereinafter referred to as BCRC China), with the support of Shenzhen Zero Waste Environmental Protection Public Welfare
Development Center and Guangzhou Plastic Free Environmental Protection Consulting Co. More than 100 leaders, experts and representatives from governments, enterprises, research institutes and social organizations attended the workshop, and Zhao Nana, Assistant Director, Chen Yuan, Chief of the Regional Chemicals Management Branch, and Tan Quanyin, Chief of the General Office, from BCRC China attended the meeting. The workshop opened on the morning of October 17 with opening remarks by four guests, including Sun Shanfang, Deputy Director of the Department of Ecology and Environment of Hainan Province, and a speech by Zhao Nana, Assistant Director, in which she introduced BCRC China and its support for China's work on plastic pollution control at different levels. Afterwards, Assistant Director Zhao Nana and Dr. Tan Quanyin made detailed presentations on the current status and outlook of the global plastic pollution control work, and the cooperation between China and Norway in plastic pollution control, respectively. On October 18, Dr. Chen Yuan acted as the moderator of the conference, organizing presentations and discussions among guests and participants on three topics, including synergistic governance of plastic pollution and climate change, and moderating a roundtable. There were six topics, including “International Plastic Pollution Control Progress”, “Local Plastic Pollution Control Practices”, “Industrial and Social Actions in the Context of Plastic Circular Economy”, “Synergistic Management of Plastic Pollution and Climate Change”, “Technical Progress and Monitoring of Plastic Pollution Control” and “Progress and Prospects of Plastics Convention”. During the conference, questions and round-table dialogues were also flexibly set up for experts and scholars in various fields to jointly explore new paths for plastic pollution control.
