To tackle with plastic pollution across the globe, the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad) has provided financial support to a number of countries through Basel and Stockholm Convention regional centres through Small Grants Programme (SGP) on Plastic Waste, which is an important component of the project “Further actions to address plastic waste under the Basel Convention” (BRS-Norad-2). “Capacity Building on Environmentally Sound Management of Single-use Plastic and its Waste in Asia-pacific Countries” implemented by BCRC China is one of the projects under SGP, which aims to improve capacities and capabilities for environmentally sound management of single-use-plastic and its waste, and prevent and minimize the generation and adverse impact of single-use plastic waste in the three participating countries: Cambodia, Myanmar and Sri Lanka. Measures taken by different countries to reduce single-use plastics and improve sound management of its waste are also reviewed and shared with all Asia-pacific countries. The project begins in 2021 and consists of the following activities: 1.Collect baseline information for single-use plastics (SUPs) and its waste for each participating country, and identify a list of SUP types to be restricted and standards of restricted SUPs for each country. 2.Review measures taken to reduce SUP consumption and waste from international experience and identify lessons learned and potential actions to be transferred to local context. 3.Conduct public survey and convene a national multi-stakeholder consultation to know locals’ and actors along the value chain’s view on existing or potential policies on SUPs. 4.Propose policy options for SUPs and its waste at the national levels in participating countries. 5.Analyse the main types of SUPs being produced and used, explore feasible substitutions as well as collection measures and handling technologies for SUP waste in the Asia-pacific region, develop a regional strategy on production, collection, handling and sound management of SUPs and its waste. 6.Convene a regional multi-stakeholder consultation to review the proposed strategy.
