Fourteenth Meeting of the Global Coordination Group and the Regional Organization Groups under the Global Monitoring Plan for POPs (GCG-14)

Highlights: The meeting focused on refining strategies for POPs monitoring and addressing key aspects of the fourth phase of the Global Monitoring Plan (GMP-4). Highlights included updates on a Global Environment Facility (GEF)-funded project supporting regional monitoring efforts and discussions on integrating mercury monitoring alongside POPs. Regional organization groups held collaborative breakout sessions to develop region-specific strategies and workplans, ensuring a coordinated and effective approach to monitoring in diverse contexts.
 
A significant portion of the meeting was devoted to reviewing and updating the GMP guidance. Expert-led sessions covered critical topics such as statistical methodologies, sampling protocols, sustainability of monitoring activities, and data handling to maintain consistency and reliability in monitoring efforts. Emerging priorities included environmental specimen banking and the selection of POPs for analysis. The meeting concluded with the preparation of key recommendations for consideration by the Conference of the Parties to the Stockholm Convention at its twelfth meeting in May 2025.
