From August 23 to 27, 2026, at the invitation of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change of Mongolia (hereinafter referred to as the "MECC"), the Basel Convention Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific (hereinafter referred to as the "BCRC China") organized a delegation to Mongolia for technical exchanges and field visits on solid waste and chemicals management. The delegation also participated in the Green Zone side events of the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).

The four-member delegation comprised Ms. Yuan Chen, Assistant Director of BCRC China; Mr. Qingyin Dong, Chief of the Regional Waste Management Branch; Mr. Yang Wu, Chairman of Shenzhen Green Ring Renewable Resources Development Co., Ltd.; and Ms. Xing Shen, Director of Guizhou Environmental Protection Industry Association Solid Waste Treatment and Utilization Division. The delegation engaged with MECC and the Ministry of Energy. They also visited academic and research institutions such as the National University of Mongolia, the Mongolian University of Science and Technology, the Mongolian Academy of Sciences, and the China-Mongolia Joint Laboratory for Mineral Processing Technology under the Belt and Road Initiative. Furthermore, the delegation conducted on-site inspections of recycling enterprises, including ElectroChem (specializing in waste lead-acid battery treatment) and TML Plastic (specializing in waste plastic recycling). The two sides exchanged views extensively, focusing on key issues such as solid waste management policies, transboundary movements of hazardous waste, and chemicals environmental governance.

This visit marks a significant milestone in implementing the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between BCRC China and MECC in Beijing in January 2026, which established a consensus on cooperation in the environmentally sound management (ESM) of chemicals and waste, as well as "Zero Waste" initiatives. BCRC China will continue to leverage its platform to foster joint technological research and mutually beneficial industrial development. By mobilizing domestic technological, industrial, and research resources, BCRC China aims to facilitate more substantive outcomes in chemicals and waste governance between Chinese and Mongolian stakeholders.
