From May 18 to 20, 2024, the 19th International Conference on Waste Management and Technology (ICWMT19, hereinafter referred to as the "Conference") was successfully held in Binjiang District, Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province. With the theme of "Building a 'Zero-Waste City' to achieve pollution reduction and carbon reduction", the conference aims to promote industry exchanges in the field of solid waste, accelerate the construction of a "Zero-Waste City", and promote the construction of an international "Zero-Waste City" network. The conference was hosted by Tsinghua University, UNEP Representative Office in China, Zhejiang Gongshang University and other organizations, organized by 7 organizations including Basel Convention Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific and Hangzhou Binjiang Environmental Development Co., LTD., and co-organized and supported by 20 organizations. The conference consisted of a 3-day general assembly, English parallel Assembly, 45 chapters, technical visits, corporate exhibitions and supply and demand matchmaking sessions. There were more than 1,100 offline participants and online participants from 30 countries including the UK, Singapore and Bangladesh. A total of 6,890,700 people from all walks of life watched the conference cloud online. Du Xiangwan, Hao Jiming, Peng Suping, Hou Lian, Duan Ning, Chen Yong, Wang Qi, Xu Zuxin, Chai Liyuan, Ma Jun, Gao Xiang, Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, as well as the Singapore Academy of Engineering, Seeram Ramakrishna, the Danish Academy of Sciences, Thomas H. Christensen, the Canadian Academy of Engineering, Brent Sleep and other 14 academicians and more than 450 domestic and international government officials in the field of solid waste and cross-disciplinary business representatives attended the meeting and make keynote reports.
In recent years, the scale of global plastics production has reached 400 million tonnes per year, and the economic scale of the plastics industry can be compared with that of the steel and cement industries. With the large-scale production, consumption and disposal of plastic products, the resource and environmental problems caused by plastic waste have become more and more prominent, resulting in a global challenge, which has been widely concerned by the international community and included in a number of international conventions. 2021 China's State Council issued the ‘Guiding Opinions on Accelerating the Establishment of a Sound Green, Low-Carbon and Cyclic Economic System’, pointing out that comprehensive resource recycling is one of the important ways to establish a low-carbon and cyclic development system and to achieve the carbon peak and carbon neutral target in a coordinated way. In order to implement the State Council's major strategic decision and deployment on strengthening resource recycling and accelerate the innovation and practice of deep, high-value, low-carbon transformation technology of plastic waste, the conference organized the establishment of ICWMT19 Session 34 ‘Low Carbon, High-Value Plastic Waste Transformation Technology Innovation and Practice’.
On 19th May, Prof. Xiu Furong of Xi'an University of Science and Technology, Prof. Ruan Jujun of Sun Yat-sen University and Associate Researcher Li Yi of Institute of Process Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, as the conveners of the session, successfully held the 34th session of ‘Low Carbon and High Value Conversion of Plastic Wastes, Technological Innovations and Practices’. The aim of the session was to provide a platform to share the latest policies, cutting-edge technology progress, and typical engineering application practices in the field of plastic waste resource recycling, and to promote the rapid and healthy development of the plastic waste low-carbon high value conversion industry in China and even in the world. More than 30 representatives from well-known experts and scholars in the field of plastic waste resource conversion and representatives of management departments, scientific research institutions and enterprises attended the offline chapter.
In Session 34, Professor Guo Jie from University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, Researcher Mei Qingqing from Zhejiang University, Professor Jin Hui from Xi'an Jiaotong University, Associate Researcher Li Yi from Institute of Process Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Associate Professor Zhao Peitao from China University of Mining and Technology, Associate Professor Qi Yingying from Xi'an University of Science and Technology, Dr Zhu Jie from Sun Yat-sen University, Dr Lu Jiaqi from Shanghai University of Engineering and Technology, Dr Gao Ruitong from Qingdao University presented nine excellent lectures on the theory, technology, practice and industrial prospect of low carbon high value conversion of electronic plastic waste, traditional plastic waste and emerging plastic waste.
Finally, Prof Xiu Furong, Prof Ruan Jujun and Associate Researcher Li Yi, the convenors of the session, made a summary and concluding speech respectively. The 34th session of ICWMT19, ‘Technological Innovation and Practice of Low Carbon and High Value Conversion of Plastic Waste’, focused on the major needs of the national "dual carbon" goal and the construction of "green low-carbon circular economy system", and strives to create a collaborative innovation exchange platform. The branch mainly focuses on the discussion of the relevant policies, principles, technologies, practices and industrialization progress of the transformation and recycling of low carbon and high value resources of plastic waste, promotes the construction of a green and low-carbon circular economy system, accelerates the construction of "waste free city", and makes positive contributions to the construction of national ecological civilization.
