The 20th International Conference on Waste Management and Technology was successfully held in Beijing under the theme “Accelerating the Development of new quality productive forces in Solid Waste and Advancing the Construction of Zero-waste City.” The event was co-hosted by Tsinghua University, the Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences, the China Association of Environmental Protection Industry, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) China Office, the State Key Laboratory of lron and Steel Industry Environmental Protection, the State Key Laboratory of Regional Environment and Sustainability, with GEM Co., Ltd. as co-organizer, and jointly organized by eight institutions including the Basel Convention Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific, supported by 28 partner organizations and journals.
The conference brought together leading experts and practitioners to exchange insights on emerging pollutants, solid waste management, resource utilization, and pollution prevention.
Prof. Jianwei Liu (Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture) explored how PET microplastics affect sludge thermal hydrolysis, showing that they influence the release of solid-phase organic matter and the transformation of small molecules, offering new perspectives on treatment mechanisms.
Assoc. Prof. Jingya Zhou (Yanbian University) examined microplastic dynamics in the Tumen River Basin’s freeze–thaw soils, highlighting migration pathways, particle aging, and release during ice melt, while proposing predictive modeling tools and removal technologies.
Prof. Li Xu (Beijing Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences) reported on microplastics in protected agriculture, revealing their impacts on soil microbes and crop physiology, with implications for food security and ecological health.
Prof. Qing Huang (Hainan University) presented a report on microplastics in groundwater near landfills, analyzing interactions with toxic elements and microbial communities, and applying machine learning for risk prediction and pollution control.
Prof. Yuan Chen (Tsinghua University / BCRC China) provided an overview of international governance and standardization progress on microplastics, stressing the importance of life-cycle management and enhanced global cooperation to address this cross-sectoral challenge.
By showcasing research from diverse disciplines—ranging from wastewater treatment and agriculture to groundwater safety and international policy—the conference underscored the urgency of tackling microplastic pollution alongside broader goals of waste reduction and sustainable development.
The event contributed to global efforts to advance zero-waste and pollution-free societies.
