On September 13, 2025, the Technical Session on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) Control Technologies at the Third Symposium on Emerging Pollutants was successfully held in Shanghai. The session was co-convened by the Basel Convention Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific / Stockholm Convention Regional Centre for Capacity-building and Transfer of Technology in Asia and the Pacific (hereinafter “BCRC China/SCRCAP”); the Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences (RCEES, CAS); the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences; and South China University of Technology. The event brought together over 50 experts from universities, research institutes, and industry for in-depth exchanges on cutting-edge technologies, policy practice, and international cooperation in POPs management.
The first half of the session was co-chaired by Prof. Guijin Su (RCEES, CAS), and Dr. Yuan Chen, Chief of the Regional Chemicals Management Branch of BCRC China/SCRCAP. Dr. Chen also delivered a keynote, “Opportunities and Challenges: Implementation of the Stockholm Convention in Asia and the Pacific,” providing a systematic review of progress and challenges among Asia and the Pacific countries in implementing the Stockholm Convention. She underscored gaps in POPs monitoring capacity and in emerging technologies for POPs waste treatment, noting these as key entry points for Chinese industry and research institutions to deepen regional cooperation.
Later the same day, Dr. Chen spoke at the Sub-Forum on Policy and Institutional Research for Emerging Pollutants, presenting an overview of the international process on microplastics governance. She elaborated on microplastics governance in four areas, covering regulatory and standards frameworks, monitoring and analytical capacity, source identification, and the interface between science and policy.
