Canada Adds 2,4-Pentanedione to the Watch List

On July 16, 2026, the Government of Canada added 2,4-pentanedione (2,4-PD; CAS RN 123-54-6) to the Watch List under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 (CEPA). In Canada, 2,4-PD has reported uses in paints and coatings, adhesives and sealants, and plastic and rubber materials, and may also be used as a component in the manufacture of food packaging materials that do not come into direct contact with food. The Government of Canada previously concluded in its final assessment of the Ketones Group that 2,4-PD is not considered harmful to human health or the environment at current levels of exposure. However, the substance is associated with health effects of concern, and there may be a concern if exposure levels increase in the future. 2,4-PD has therefore been added to the Watch List and may also be considered in future initiatives to track its commercial status or identify new uses or exposures.
