On February 5th, the MaterialRecycling Association of India(MRAI) has issued a news releaseannouncing the removal of import levies on several forms of nonferrous recycled metals, including copper-bearing scrap. MRAI has met with India’s Ministry of Steel, Ministry of Mines and other government bureaus in the nation for several years to try to remove levies on what the organization considers an important raw material for India. The basic customs duty on nonferrous scrap has been reduced to nil in India's Union Budget 2025-26. This applies to nonferrous scrap, including lead, zinc, copper, brass and lithium-ion battery scrap. They remain committed to continued advocacy within government corridors for the reduction of duty on aluminum scrap, aiming to align scrap duties in India with global standards.
