On May 30, the Department of Public Works and Environmental Services in Chilliwack, Canada, held the first Recycling Star program, which aims to reduce pollution and increase the recycling rate of residents. In partnership with local environmental groups (Fraser Valley Clean) and supermarket chains (Save-On-Foods), the program plans that from June to December, city staff will count roadside recycling bins and hand out gold or blue stars. A gold star indicates that only compliant materials are contained in the recycling bin, and the family will have a chance to receive a gift card, and a blue star indicates that the city’ recycling requirements have not yet been met. This is a new way to encourage residents to further sort their recyclables.
