On November 3, Recycling in Stratford got an upgrade with automated carts. Each new cart holds about three times the capacity of the old rectangular bins, which Burbach hopes will encourage residents to recycle more. The expanded provincial program will also accept a wider range of items, including tetrapaks, single-use coffee cups, and more types of aluminum packaging; all are materials that Stratford’s current system does not handle. The change is part of a province-wide initiative that shifts responsibility for recycling costs from municipalities to the producers of packaging materials - companies like Coca-Cola, Tim Hortons, and McDonald’s. The program will be managed by Circular Materials, a national not-for-profit organization leading the development of a more efficient and consistent recycling system across Ontario.
