The ICWMT19 comprised one plenary session, English parallel session, 45 sessions, technical visits and corporate exhibitions. It attracted over 1100 in-person participants and the areas of Online participants are from 30 countries and regions such as the United Kingdom,Singapore, Bangladesh and others. At the same time, a total of 6.89 million viewers from all sectors of society watched the conference cloud live online. The conference invited 14 academicians including Xiangwan DU, Jiming HAO, Suping PENG, Li'an HOU, Ning DUAN, Yong CHEN, Qi WANG, Zuxin XU, Liyuan CHAI, Jun MA, Xiang GAO, Seeram Ramakrishna, Thomas H. Christensen and Brent Sleep. The conference attracted over 450 government officials, experts, scholars and business representatives from the solid waste field and interdisciplinary fields at home and abroad to attend and deliver keynote speeches. The conference also invited 97 representatives from 7 provinces and autonomous regions, including Shandong, Henan and Shangxi, as well as from 36 cities including Sanya, Shenzhen, Baoding and Zhengzhou. The conference had established an important communication platform and offered technical support for advancing the development of "zero-waste city" in China and the collaborative work of pollution and carbon reduction.
The conference officially opened on the morning of May 18th, chaired by Jinhui LI, the Chairman of ICWMT19, Professor of Tsinghua University and Executive Director of BCRC-China. Other notable speakers included Jinyuan HUAN, Deputy Mayor of Hangzhou Municipal People's Government; Zhifu HAN, Chief Engineer of the Department of Ecology and Environment of Zhejiang Province; Chengzhan GUO, Party Secretary and President of China Association of Environmental Protection Industry; Zhiqiang ZHOU, Level l Bureau Rank Official of the Department of Solid Waste and Chemicals Ministry of Ecology and Environment of the People's Republic of China; Rolph Payet, Executive Secretary of Secretariat of BRS Conventions; Jiming HAO, the Chairman of ICWMT19 Scientific Committee, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Dean of the Institute of Environmental Science and Engineering at Tsinghua University, delivered speeches respectively.
In the "Academician Seminar" part , 8 academicians presented reports to shared their experiences and insights on the construction of "zero-waste city" and "zero-waste villages" , the hazardous waste source reduction, the high-value utilization of arsenic-containing hazardous waste, environmentally friendly packaging materials, innovative technologies for pollution reduction and carbon emission reduction, circular economy, solid waste resource utilization and rural area sources pollution control strategies and technologies. Additionally, academician Suping Peng discussed key technologies for ecological restoration in coal mining areas along the Yellow River during Session Nine. Furthermore, two academicians, Thomas H. Christensen and Brent Sleep, shared online reports related on waste life cycle assessment and groundwater pollution by chlorinated solvents.
During the "Zero-Waste City" Mayor Exchange Session, experiences in solid waste management and "zero-waste city " construction of the United Nations and relevant cities were shared by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Sihanoukville City of Cambodia, Palmerston North and Auckland Cities of New Zealand, Balcarce City of Argentina, Surabaya City of Indonesia, Zahle City of Lebanon, Zriba City of Tunisia, as well as the Basel Convention Regional Centres for Southeast Asia, Iran, South America, and Arab States.
In addition, the plenary session also invited Deputy Director Zhiqiang NIE, Secretariat Tessa Goverse (SPP OEWG), 54 domestical and international government officials and experts from Tsinghua University, Tongji University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the National Institute for Environmental Studies of Japan, and Gyeonggi University of South Korea to deliver keynote speeches on special topics.
Meanwhile, the ICWMT19 organized 45 sessions focusing on topics such as "zero-waste city", "Carbon Neutrality", circular economy, bulk solid waste, municipal waste, organic wastes, hazardous waste,emerging pollutants, and emerging contaminants. These sessions included "zero-waste city" construction management and practice, collaboration in solid waste recycling and pollution and carbon reduction, student forum, etc. Nearly 400 government officials, experts and scholars, business representatives, and student representatives participated in the sessions and delivered relevant keynote speeches.
The closing ceremony of the conference was held on the morning of May 20th. Lili LIU, an Assistant Director of BCRC-China and Professor of Tsinghua university, chaired and summarized the closing ceremony. On the afternoon of May 20th, the conference organized four technical visits to "Zero-Waste Asian Games" - Hangzhou Asian Games Museum, "Zero-Waste Group" - Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, "Zero-waste Village" - Zhejiang Province Fuyang District Bayi Village and "Zero-Waste Scenic Area" - Xiaoshan District Xianghu Lake National Tourist Resort Area. The conference was held the "Exhibition of Innovative Technologies and Equipment for Pollution Reduction and Carbon Emission Reduction", which focused on showcasing innovative technologies, excellent equipment, environmental protection materials, emerging contaminant of solid waste and carbon abatement.
The ICWMT19 adhered to the zero-carbon event organization principle and actively implemented the green and low-carbon concept. In accordance with the "Implementation Guidelines for Carbon Neutrality of Large-scale Events (Trial)" issued by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, the total carbon emissions of the conference were 401.96 tons, which have been offset by cancelling 402 tons of carbon emission reduction credits issued under the United Nations Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), achieving carbon neutrality for the entire conference event.
