Asia-Pacific Regional Workshop on updating and implementing the Stockholm Convention National Implementation Plans Successfully Held

On April 3, 2025, the Asia-Pacific Regional Workshop on updating and implementing the Stockholm Convention National Implementation Plans( hereinafter referred to as “ NIPs”), hosted by the United Nations Environment Programme ( hereinafter referred to as “ UNEP”) and organized by the Basel Convention Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific/Stockholm Convention Regional Centre for Capacity-building and the Transfer of Technology in Asia and the Pacific ( hereinafter referred to as “ BCRC China/SCRCAP”), was successfully held in Beijing. The workshop aimed to enhance the capacity of Asia and Pacific countries to update NIPs and national report to promote the implementation of the Stockholm Convention. More than 20 governmental representatives from 11 countries, including Malaysia, the Cook Islands, Bahrain, etc. as well as officials from UNEP and the Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm Conventions ( hereinafter referred to as “BRS Secretariat”), international experts on the sound management of chemicals and waste, attend the workshop.
The meeting was chaired by Ms. Mihaela Claudia Paun, Programme Management Officer of Chemicals and Health Branch, Industry and Economy Division of UNEP. Mr. Li Jinhui, Executive Director of BCRC China/SCRCAP ( Professor of School of Environment of Tsinghua University) delivered the opening remarks. Ms. Mihaela introduced the objectives of the workshop as well as the Integrated Electronic Toolkit under Stockholm Convention; Mr. Liu Jiasheng, Associate Programme Management Officer of UNEP, presented the chemicals and waste related work carried out by GEF/UNEP; Mr. Suman Sharma, Programme Management Officer of the BRS Secretariat, introduced NIPs under Stockholm Convention; Mr. Roland Weber, an international expert on chemicals management, provided detailed insights into the UNEP global report “Production, Use and Trade of Newly Listed POPs (2009-2022)”, guidelines for sectoral inventories of POPs and other chemicals of concern in Construction, Electronics, and Vehicles, methodology for strengthening collaboration with national statistical offices to address gaps in POPs Data and Related Information, Quality Assurance and Quality Control for POPs inventories data validation; Ms. Anastasiya Buchok from the Green Growth Knowledge Partnership, shared experiences on outreach and stakeholder engagement for NIPs. Experiences and challenges in updating and submitting NIPs and national reports, as well as the challenges faced in conducting POPs monitoring from regional countries were also discussed in the workshop.
The workshop aimed to promote the submission and updating of NIPs in Asia-Pacific countries, deepen regional countries understanding of NIPs, analyze the difficulties and challenges faced by countries in submitting NIPs, POPs monitoring and data access, enhance regional coordination and cooperation, and improve the capacity of Asia-Pacific countries on POPs monitoring and inventory development.
