On April 5, 2025, the Asia-Pacific Regional Workshop for the Global Chemicals Monitoring Programme (GCMP) was successfully held in Beijing. The workshop was organized by the Basel Convention Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific / Stockholm Convention Regional Centre for Capacity-building and Transfer of Technology in Asia and the Pacific (hereinafter referred to as the "BCRC China/SCRCAP"), bringing together over 20 participants, including representatives from 11 countries such as Cambodia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Fiji, and the Solomon Islands, as well as officials from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The workshop aimed to share CEO endorsement documents and discuss the workplan under the GCMP framework for Asia and the Pacific.
Ms. Haosong Jiao, Associate Programme Management Officer of UNEP, chaired the meeting and presented an overview of the GCMP project, including its objectives, activity framework, expected outputs, implementation arrangement and budget. This was followed by Q&A for all participants.
GCMP is a Global Environment Facility (GEF) project developed by UNEP to support the implementation of the Stockholm Convention and the Minamata Convention on Mercury. The project will collect samples from 19 countries in the Asia-Pacific region and screen qualified, capable laboratories to conduct monitoring of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and mercury. Then the project will assess the global distribution and trends of POPs and mercury by data analyzing, and support the global effectiveness evaluations under Stockholm Convention and Minamata Convention on Mercury. As the executing agency for GCMP in Asia and the Pacific region, the BCRC China/SCRCAP is responsible for coordinating the project’s execution and guiding the pilot countries to carry out project activities.
