The regional preparatory meeting for the 2025 meetings of the conferences of the Parties to the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions (hereinafter referred to as the “BRS conventions”) was held from 4 to 6 April 2025 in Beijing. More than 100 representatives from 34 Parties and 21 observer organizations participated on-site, and more than 20 representatives from 14 Parties and 4 observer organizations participated online. The Chinese delegation, comprising the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of the Environment of the People’s Republic of China and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China,participated on-site. The objective of the regional preparatory meeting was to give Parties from the Asia-Pacific region the possibility to consult each other in advance of the 2025 COPs, consider meeting documents, discuss substantive matters, identify regional priorities and challenges, and facilitate the preparation of regional positions and forthcoming elections. The programme for the meeting was developed in consultation with members of the bureaux of the conferences of the Parties to the three conventions from the Asia-Pacific region. The regional preparatory meeting for the 2025 meetings of the conferences of the Parties was hosted by the Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions (hereinafter referred to as the Secretariat) and organized by the Basel Convention Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific. As Vice-Chair of the ad hoc Open-Ended Working Group (OEWG) of the Science-policy panel to contribute further to the sound management of chemicals and waste and to prevent pollution(SPP), Li Jinhui extended an invitation to delegates to participate in the resumed 3rd meeting of the ad hoc OEWG of the SPP, which will be held in Uruguay in mid-June this year. The SPP was established by the Fifth United Nations Environment Assembly as a strategic initiative of the international community to put action on chemicals and pollution on a par with action on climate and nature.
During the three-day meeting, representatives considered in turn the strategic issues, scientific and technical matters for the issues Basel Convention, compliance mechanisms and rules of procedure for the Rotterdam Convention, financial mechanisms and unintentional production for the Stockholm Convention, and joint matters for the three conventions, including international cooperation and technical assistance. Representatives of all countries exchanged views in preparation for the upcoming conferences of the parties to the three conventions at the end of the month.
