On September 26, Hilde Singsaas, Director General of the Norwegian Environment Agency, Mr. Joar Lønning Strand, Environmental Counselor at the Royal Norwegian Embassy in China, and other members of the delegation visited Basel Convention Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific (hereinafter referred to as “BCRC China”). They were received by Mr. Jinhui Li, Executive Director of BCRC China and Professor at Tsinghua University, among others, for discussions.
Ms. Hilde Singsaas stated that the “Sino-Norwegian cooperation project on capacity building for reducing plastic and microplastic pollution” (hereinafter referred to as “SINOPLAST II”) serves as a vital platform for bilateral cooperation, expressing interest in learning more about the work of BCRC China in waste and chemicals management. Professor Jinhui Li welcomed the delegation, noting the smooth progress of SINOPLAST II and anticipating expanded environmental governance collaboration in the future. During the visit, both sides engaged in in-depth discussions on topics including plastic pollution control, solid waste management practices, and research supporting policy development.
The SINOPLAST II, initiated by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment and implemented by BCRC China, concluded its first phase in June 2023. The second phase commenced in May 2024 and will run through December 2027. It aims to enhance China’s capabilities in managing plastics throughout their entire lifecycle and support the implementation of relevant policies.
