From July 5 to 7, the 21st International Conference on Waste Management and Technology (hereinafter referred to as “ICWMT”) was successfully held in Shanghai. Under the theme “Synergizing Carbon Reduction, Pollution Control, Green Growth — Exploring a 'Zero-waste' Future” the Conference was jointly organized by Tsinghua University, Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences, China Association of Environmental Protection Industry, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), State Key Laboratory of Iron and Steel Industry Environmental Protection, Tongji University, and other institutions. It was hosted by 11 organizations, including BCRC China, and supported by 19 organizations and journals. Hao Jiming, International Member of the US National Academy of Engineering, Professor at Tsinghua University, served as Chairman of the Scientific Committee of the ICWMT 21. Xi Beidou, President at the Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences, and Li Jinhui, Executive Director of BCRC China and Professor at the School of Environment, Tsinghua University, served as Co-Chairman of the Conference.
The three-day conference featured a rich program of activities, including plenary sessions, an English-language session, 51 parallel sessions, technical tours, and corporate exhibitions. More than 1,500 experts, scholars, industry representatives, and government officials from the global solid waste sector attended in person, while the plenary sessions and some parallel sessions were also available online, with virtual participants from 63 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, and Singapore. The Conference emphasized the presentation of academic achievements, soliciting 174 papers, 447 abstracts, and 42 posters related to the conference themes. These were compiled into the conference proceedings and abstract book, with posters displayed on-site. Following review and selection by experts from the conference’s Scientific Committee, 15 outstanding papers were awarded.
The successful hosting of this conference not only established a high-level platform for exchange among global experts, scholars, industry representatives, and government officials in the field of solid waste management, but also fostered consensus and synergy both domestically and internationally regarding carbon reduction, pollution adatement, green growth, and the construction of a “zero waste” future. It made a significant contribution to advancing the modernization of solid waste management systems, deepening international cooperation, and jointly building a clean and beautiful world.
