Research Fellow and Academic Associate
Dr. Anupam Khajuria is currently working as a Research Fellow and Academic Associate with the Innovation and Education Programme at UNU-IAS, Tokyo, Japan. Her expertise lies in the realm of environmental research with an emphasis on waste and water management. Having earned her Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from Osaka University in 2010, her research pursuits have been directed at enhancing waste management systems across South Asian countries, employing the DPSIR (Driving Force-Pressure-State-Impact-Response) analytical framework. During her tenure as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Tokyo Institute of Technology between 2012 and 2014, she contributed significantly to the project aimed at the long-term vision for the sustainable use of the world's freshwater resources. Between her Ph.D. and postdoctoral spans, she also held a position of Research Associate at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore from 2011 to 2012, where she focused on developing agricultural vulnerability profiles, particularly in the context of climate-change-induced stresses. In her Ph.D. journey, she parallelly assumed the role of a research assistant at the Kansai Research Centre of the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies in Kobe. Earlier, she also held the position of environmental manager at the Common Bio-Medical Treatment Facility in Agra from 2005 to 2007.
Prior to joining UNU, Dr. Khajuria worked as a researcher at the United Nations Centre for Regional Development (UNCRD)-DSDG/UN DESA in Nagoya, Japan, for almost 10 years. She was managing three important projects at UNCRD, namely “Promotion of 3R and Circular Economy in Asia and the Pacific Region”, “International Partnership for Expanding Waste Management Services of Local Authorities (IPLA) - an SDG Partnership”, and “State of 3R in Asia and the Pacific”.
For over a decade, she has coordinated several training programs, forums, conferences, and seminars with national and international governmental organizations. She has extensive knowledge and experience in conducting environmental research projects. She has published a number of research articles in peer-reviewed international journals in the environmental sciences domain, with a specific focus on waste and water engineering, the circular economy, and the pursuit of sustainable development. Furthermore, she has been associated with several environmental/scientific societies and contributes to the editorial boards of a few journals, such as Circular Economy; International Journal of Development and Sustainability; and Circular Economy of Frontier in Sustainability
