Bioenergy production from agricultural waste and pollution control

Time:

Address:

In China, the yearly production of above 3 billion tons of livestock manure and about 900 million tons of crop straw not only signifies a considerable biomass resource but also has the potential to become a non-point source of pollution if not adequately managed in certain scenarios. The utilization of agricultural waste for bioenergy conversion has long been a key focus in the protection of agricultural ecological environment, which is closely related to the successful implementation of green agriculture and rural revitalization. This SESSSION of the CONFERENCE mainly focuses on the biological conversion of agricultural waste, including both gaseous fuels (biogas, biomethane, and bio-hydrogen) and liquid fuels (biodiesel, bioethanol, etc.). The pollution control aspects involve nutrient management, greenhouse gas reduction, as well as the reduction of pathogenic bacteria, antibiotics, and the removal of emerging pollutants.

  • Wei QIAO Professor

    China Agricultural University

I am Wei Qiao, a professor and doctoral supervisor at the College of Engineering, China Agricultural University. My main research focuses on anaerobic treatment and resource utilization of organic solid waste. I have conducted studies on anaerobic digestion of agricultural waste, sewage sludge, food waste, and coffee grounds. Specifically, I have researched high-temperature/high-ammonia nitrogen/high-solid anaerobic digestion processes, high-solid anaerobic membrane bioreactors, micronutrients enhancement, in-situ bio-desulfurization of biogas, and the deep inactivation of pathogens and elimination of antibiotics in (super) high-temperature and mesophilic anaerobic conditions. I have also undertaken research projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation, Beijing Natural Science Foundation, National Key Research and Development Program, Beijing Key Science and Technology Program, Hainan Key Research and Development Program, as well as providing technical services to industry enterprises. I have published over 100 academic papers. I serve as the Deputy Chairman of the Youth Editorial Committee for the first edition of “China Environmental Science,” a member of the National Biogas Standardization Technical Committee (SAC/TC515) for the second term, a board member of the Beijing Society of Agricultural Engineering, an international member of the Water Environment Association of Japan, a member of the European Biogas Association, a committee member of the ISO/TC255 working groups 4 and 5 for the International Organization for Standardization “Biogas” Technical Committee, a senior member of the International Carbon Capture Association, a senior member of the International Society of Biological Processes, and a committee member of the International Water Association Sludge Management Young Experts Group.
