The Norwegian Embassy in China with BCRC China Exchange the Sino-Norwegian Cooperation Project "Marine Waste Plastics and Micro-Plastics Management Capacity Building”

On October 16, 2019, Mr.Christoffer Gronstad, environmental counselor of the Norwegian embassy in China and other three persons visited BCRC China, in order to exchange the opinions of "China-Norway Cooperation Project 'Marine Waste Plastics and Micro-plastics Management Capacity Building'", and discuss the follow-up arrangements. Professor Li Jinhui, the Executive director of BCRC China, Mr. Gao Xingbao, the Deputy director of Solid Wastes Division, Department of Solid Wastes and Chemicals, Ministry of Ecology and Environment of China, and Ms. Zhao Nana, Mr. Tan Quanyin and Ms. Chen Yuan of RCRC China had a discussion with the guests.
The project was jointly applied by the Department of International Cooperation, Ministry of Ecology and Environment of China and the Norwegian Institute of Water Environment, and BCRC China is the executing unit. It is aimed to strengthen the pollution prevention , control capabilities of waste plastics and micro-plastics in China, and provide policy management and technical support for China-Norway bilateral environmental cooperation, through the activities of pass source identification, environmental impact assessment and environmental fate analysis, pollution monitoring technology, tool development, policy research, and awareness raising on waste plastics and micro-plastics. The project implementation cycle is 3.5 years. The participating units in China include the Solid Wastes and Chemicals Management Technology Center of Ministry of Ecology and Environment, the National Marine Environmental Monitoring Center, and the State Key Laboratory of Estuarine and Coastal Research of East China Normal University.During the meeting, Mr. Christoffer Grønstad said that the development of this project is of great significance for promoting thedebris and protecting the marine environment between China and Norway, and the project contract would be signed and started as soon as possible. Mr. Gao Xingbao reduction of marine expressed approval for the project’s idea to protect the ocean from plastic wastespollution by controlling and reducing the generation of land-based plastic wastes, and also affirmed the timing of project implementation. At last, Mr. Christoffer Grønstad expressed his appreciation for the work and achievements of BCRC China, and exchanged views with Professor Li Jinhui on furthering the cooperation between the two parties and also the latest developments on the plastics issues under UN Environment Assembly and Basel Convention.
