The Fifth International Conference on Waste Management and Technology was held at Tsinghua University in Beijing on December 15-17, 2010. The conference was hosted by Tsinghua University, the Solid Waste Branch of the Chinese Society For Environmental Sciences, the Stockholm Convention Regional Centre for Capacity-building and the Transfer of Technology in Asia and the Pacific, and hosted by the Basel Convention Coordination Center for Asia and the Pacific and the Solid Waste Management Center of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of the People's Republic of China. More than 350 representatives from universities, government departments, research institutes and industry from 34 different countries and regions attended the conference.
Mr. Xinmin LI, Inspector of the Pollution Control Department of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of the People's Republic of China; Ms. Katarina Kummer Perry, Executive Secretary of the Secretariat of the Basel Convention; Academician Jiming HAO, Dean of the Institute of Environmental Science and Engineering of Tsinghua University; and Mr. Hao QUAN, Director of the Solid Waste Branch of the Chinese Society For Environmental Sciences, addressed the opening ceremony of the conference. Forty-three well-known experts and scholars at home and abroad, including Mr. Kexiong DU, official of the Solid Waste Management Division of the Pollution Prevention and Control Department of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of the People's Republic of China, and Professor Fumikazu Yoshida of Hokkaido University, Japan, respectively, delivered keynote reports on solid waste management and treatment technology, electronic waste and biomass waste management and treatment technology.
The conference has four thematic areas, namely e-waste, hazardous waste, municipal sludge and domestic waste treatment and disposal management technology. In order to promote the research and exchange of solid waste management technology and policy in the Asia-Pacific region, the conference also arranged several parts, including "Thematic Report on the trend of solid waste management policy in Asia", "Research on e-waste projects and issues at the regional level", "Development of China's e-waste treatment technology" and "China's e-waste treatment and disposal industry and Industrial Development Trend". In addition, the Symposium on Capacity Building and Awareness Raising for the Sound Management of Asbestos Waste in the Asia-Pacific Region and the China-Us Forum on Environmental Cooperation on Solid Waste Treatment and Disposal provided a platform for extensive exchanges and cooperation between domestic and foreign officials, experts and industry in the field of solid waste management and science and technology. The proceedings of this conference were searched by ISTP, one of the three major searches, and a total of 155 papers were received and 62 reports were published. The conference added the enterprise exhibition link, a total of 9 well-known electronic waste and hazardous waste treatment enterprises at home and abroad participated. The business visit session of the conference provided the delegates with the opportunity to exchange and learn from each other about the technical practices and management experience of e-waste and hazardous waste treatment enterprises. Professor Hongtao WANG and Associate Researcher Wenjing LU from the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering participated in the presentation and chairing of the conference. More than 40 students from the department of Environmental Science and Engineering participated in the conference and submitted 18 papers to the conference.
After the confenren, the Basel Convention Coordinating Centre for Asia and the Pacific collated and published the proceedings.
