In order to promote extensive exchanges and cooperation in the field of solid waste management and technology, with the approval of the Ministry of Environmental Protection, the 4th International Conference on Waste Management and Technology, organized by the Basel Convention Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific, was held in the Sino-Italian Environment and Energy Conservation- efficient Building of Tsinghua University from November 18 to 20, 2009.
Deputy Director Xinmin Li, Inspector of the Pollution Control Department of the Ministry of Environmental Protection, Professor Gang Yu, Director of the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering of Tsinghua University, and Mr. Hao Quan, the Society of Solid Waste of the Chinese Society for Environmental Sciences, delivered opening speeches. Additionally, 21 renowned experts and scholars, including Mr.Kexiong Du, official of the Pollution Prevention and Control Department of the Ministry of Environmental Protection, Professor Yongfeng Nie from the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering of Tsinghua University, and Professor Fumikazu Yoshida from Hokkaido University, delivered keynote reports on topics such as solid waste management and treatment technology, as well as the management and treatment of electronic and biomass waste.
The conference received a total of 70 abstracts, 42 papers and 53 published reports, and more than 145 representatives from domestic and foreign universities, government departments, research institutes and industry attended the conference. In addition, the conference specifically addressed pressing issues related to e-waste and hazardous waste management and disposal in China by organizing special forums on "Waste from Electrical and Electronic Eequipment (WEEE) management Policy", "Hazardous Waste Treatment Industry Development Forum" and "Electronic Waste Treatment Industry Development Forum". These forums provide a platform for extensive exchanges and cooperation between domestic and foreign officials, experts and industry in the field of solid waste management and technology.
