The 6th International Conference on Waste Management and Technology was held in Suzhou from August 30 to September 1st, 2011. The annual International Conference on Waste Management and Technology, organized by the Basel Convention Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific, has become an important platform to elaborate scientific ideas, showcase advanced experience, discuss environmental issues, and find solutions. The conference was jointly hosted by Tsinghua University, the Society of Solid Waste of the Chinese Society for Environmental Sciences, United Nations Environment Programme, Stockholm Convention Centre for Capacity-building and the Transfer of Technology in Asia and the Pacific, with the Basel Convention Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific and the Solid Waste Management Center of the Ministry of Environmental Protection serving as organizers, supported by Suzhou Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau. A total of more than 270 representatives from domestic and foreign universities, government departments, research institutes and industry attended the conference. The conference set up an academic steering committee and an industry expert committee, composed of 48 experts from the fields of solid waste management, technology research, and industry, both domestically and internationally, Academician Jiming Hao of Tsinghua University served as the chairman of the academic Steering committee, and Professor Jinhui Li, Executive secretary of the School of Environment of Tsinghua University/Basel Convention Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific, served as the chairman of the conference.
At the opening ceremony, speeches were delivered by Academician Jiming Hao, Dean of the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering of Tsinghua University; Mr. Shigang Zhang Chief Representative of the United Nations Environment Programme China Office; Dr. Ying Chen, from Solid Waste Management Center of the Ministry of Environmental Protection, on behalf of the Department of Pollution Prevention and Control of the Ministry; and Mr. Hao Quan, Director of the Society of Solid Waste of the Chinese Society for Environmental Sciences. Sixty renowned experts and scholars from both domestic and international institutions, including Mr. Dadan Wardhana H.S., Secretariat of the Basel Convention; Professor Shinichi Sakai, Chairman of Japan Society of Waste Management Experts (JSWME); Professor Yoshida Fumikazu from Hokkaido University, delivered keynote reports on solid waste management and treatment technology, electronic waste and biomass waste management and technology. Selected Proceedings of the 6th International Conference on Waste Management and Technology will be published by the Scientific Research Publishing (USA) and indexed by ISTP.
In addition, two back-to-back meetings were held during the conference: the "Regional Workshop on e-waste Recycling Partnership" held on August 29-30, and the "China Solid Waste Strategic Research Seminar" held on the afternoon of August 31. This year’s conference also included an exhibition section, with several well-known domestic and international companies specializing in e-waste and hazardous waste treatment participating.
