The 7th International Conference on Waste Management and Technology was held in Xijiao Hotel in Beijing from September 5 to 7, 2012. About 450 representatives from research institutes, enterprises and government departments across more than 30 countries attended the conference.
The conference was jointly organized by Tsinghua University, the Solid Waste Management Center of the Ministry of Environmental Protection, the United Nations Environment Programme and Stockholm Convention Regional Centre for Capacity-building and the Transfer of Technology in Asia and the Pacific, and co-hosted by the Basel Convention Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific and the Society of Solid Waste of the Chinese Society for Environmental Sciences.
Ms. Lei Li, Deputy Director General of the Pollution Control Department of the Ministry of Environmental Protection, Academician Jiming Hao, Dean of the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering of Tsinghua University, and Ms. Heidelore Fiedler from the United Nations Environment Programme delivered speeches on the opening ceremony of the conference. Deputy Director Lei Li and Academician Yi Qian from the Chinese Academy of Engineering made keynote speeches on China's solid waste management experience and the development of urban mineral resources and circular economy. Mr. Donald Cooper, United Nations Environment Programme, and Mr. Shinichi Sakai, Chair of the Japan Society of Waste Management Experts (JSWME), Zhong Bing, Director of the Solid Waste Management Division of the Pollution Prevention Department of the Ministry of Environmental Protection, Hu Hualong, Executive Deputy Director of the Solid Waste Management Center of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and other 48 well-known experts and scholars from both domestic and international institutions delivered insightful reports. These reports covered a wide range of topics, including the development trend of solid waste management and technology, circular economy and urban mineral utilization, domestic and foreign e-waste treatment technology and industry development, as well as management and treatment of urban waste, rural waste, hazardous waste, industrial waste, municipal solid waste, and sludge.
A total of 120 full academic papers were received at this conference. "Proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Waste Management and Technology" will be published in full by Elsevier Press and submitted for indexing in EI and ISTP.
The International Conference on Waste Management and Technology has become an important platform to elaborate scientific ideas, demonstrate advanced experience, discuss environmental issues, and find solutions. Since its inception in 2003, it has been successfully held seven times, establishing itself as one of the key academic conferences in the field of solid waste internationally. The conference set up an academic steering committee and an industry expert committee, composed of 48 experts from domestic and foreign solid waste management and technology research and industry fields, Academician Hao Jiming of Tsinghua University served as the chairman of the academic Steering committee, and Professor Li Jinhui, executive secretary of the Basel Convention Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific, served as the chairman of the conference.
In addition, to research and exchange on solid waste management technologies and policies in the Asia-Pacific region, the 11th Asia-Pacific Islands Expert Workshop on Solid Waste was held concurrently with this conference. " The Persistent Organic Pollutants Elimination Network (PEN) Advisory Committee (Fourth Meeting) and Joint Working Group Meeting” as well as “the Fifth Sino-Japanese Solid Waste Working Group Meeting" were also held back-to-back with this conference.
