The 11th International Conference on Waste Management and Technology was held in Beijing on October 22-24, 2016. More than 450 representatives from universities, government departments, research institutes and industry across 27 different countries and regions attended the conference.
Conference site
With the theme of "Green, Low-carbon, Circular and Development", the conference was jointly organized by Tsinghua University, the Center for Solid Waste and Chemicals Management of the Ministry of Environmental Protection, the United Nations Environment Programme, and the Stockholm Convention Regional Centre for Capacity‐building and the Transfer of Technology in Asia and the Pacific. The event was co-hosted by Basel Convention Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific (BCRC China), the Society of Solid Waste of the Chinese Society for Environmental Sciences, the Institute of Solid Waste Pollution Control Technology of the Chinese Academy of Environmental Sciences, and the Institute of Environmental Research of Macao University of Science and Technology.It received support from government entities of five countries, including Ministry of Environmental Protection of China, the Ministry of Climate Change of Pakistan, the Ministry of Environment and Tourism of Mongolia, the Ministry of Environment of Cambodia, and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Laos.
Jinhui Li, Executive Director of the BCRC China, served as the Conference Chair and presided over the opening ceremony. Director Jialing Zhang of the Solid Waste Management Division of the Ministry of Environmental Protection delivered the opening remarks on behalf of Director Qiwen Qiu, while Mr. Juan Fernando Caicedo Restrepo, Project Officer of the Chemicals and Waste Division of the United Nations Environment Programme, also delivered opening remarks. Academician Xiangwan Du, Chinese Academy of Engineering; Director Jiang Ling, Center for Solid Waste and Chemicals Management of Ministry of Environmental Protection; Professor Yong Geng, Dean of School of Environmental Science and Engineering of Shanghai Jiao Tong University; Mr. Shunichi Honda, Project Officer of International Environmental Technology Center of United Nations Environment Programme; and Professor Thomas Christensen, Academician of Royal Danish Academy of Sciences & Letters and Professor Remy Gourdon from the Institut National des Sciences Appliquées de Lyon gave keynote speeches. The conference attracted over 60 experts from both domestic and international backgrounds, featuring 49 presentations in the main sessions and 25 presentations in the sub-sessions. A total of 6 outstanding papers were selected, along with 3 awards for outstanding graduate student oral presentations and 1 award for outstanding poster display.
In conjunction with this international conference, several back-to-back seminars were held, including the "Workshop on the Recycling and Treatment of Waste Electrical and Electronic Products and Identification of Used Products," the "Workshop on Solid Waste Management in Macau and the Pearl River Delta Region," and the "Workshop on Alternatives to Lead Paint and Recycling of Lead-Acid Batteries." Additionally, the conference organized site visits to enterprises involved in hazardous waste disposal and resource utilization, as well as those engaged in electronic waste dismantling and final disposal.
Outstanding paper, oral presentation and poster award scene
During the conference, a special meeting on the "Asia-Pacific Regional Metal Resource Recycling Public-Private Partnership Program," initiated and implemented by the BCRC China, was also organized. Additionally, a signing ceremony for the cooperation agreement on "Capacity Building for Collaborative Disposal of Hazardous Waste" between the BCRC China and Beijing Ecological Island Technology Co., Ltd. took place.

Since its first session in 2005, the international conference has adhered to its mission of creating a relaxed and open platform for academic exchange. It is dedicated to providing a space for experts and scholars, as well as industry professionals, engaged in the research of solid waste management and treatment technologies, to articulate scientific concepts, showcase advanced experiences, and seek solutions. Over the past ten years, the conference has developed significantly, gaining increasing recognition internationally and playing an increasingly important role in academic exchanges within the field of solid waste.
