ICWMT12 Was Successfully Held

The Basel Convention Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific organized the "Toolkit Development Training on Combating Illicit Waste Trade Management" in Beijing from 17 to 20 October 2017, which was organized under the auspices of the 12th International Conference on Waste Management and Technology (hereinafter referred to as "ICWMT12"). It is also the only conference of ICWMT12. A total of 21 representatives from 9 countries from China and Europe, including Croatia, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Germany and Spain, involved in customs, quality inspection, courts, procuratorates, public security and environmental protection systems participated. The conference invited Ms. Vittoria LUDA DI CORTEMIGLIA, Consultant, United Nations University; Ms. Nancy Isarin, Environmental Consultant, Consulting Firm, Netherlands; and Howard, Chief Legal Adviser, Environment Agency, United Kingdom Mr McCann and Mr Huibrecht van Westen, Coordinator of the UN Environment Regional Implementation Network on Chemicals and Waste, delivered the training.
Professor Jinhui LI, Executive Director of the Asia-Pacific Centre, presided over the opening ceremony. Xiang DAI, Deputy Director of the Solid State Division of the Department of Soil and Environmental Management, Ministry of Environmental Protection, Vittoria LUDA DI CORTEMIGLIA, Consultant of the United Nations University, and Deyi HOU, Assistant Dean of the School of Environment, Tsinghua University, delivered opening speeches respectively. At the conference, four experts gave lectures and conducted panel discussions on waste definition, monitoring and monitoring of transferred waste, intelligence, handling of containers containing waste, prosecution, and sentencing. After the conference, the representatives visited the General Administration of Customs and held a discussion on the update of the newly issued "List of Prohibited Imports of Solid Waste" in China in July and the concerns of European representatives.
The training session was one of the activities of the project "Toolkit Development to Curb Illicit Waste Trade Management" in which APAC participated. The project was funded by the European Commission and led by the United Nations University, with the participation of eight institutions, including the Asia Pacific Centre, the Swiss Cross-border Research Alliance, Compliance and Risk Ireland, the SRL in Tecan, Italy, the African Port Environment Network in Ghana, the Regional Centre Basel West Africa in Nigeria and the Office of the Public Prosecutor in Bari, Italy.
