In order to promote extensive exchanges and cooperation in the field of solid waste management and science and technology, the 4th International Conference on Waste Management and Technology, organized by the Basel Convention Coordinating Center for Asia and the Pacific, was held in the Sino-Italian Ecological and Energy Efficient Building of Tsinghua University from November 18-20, 2009 with the approval of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of the People's Republic of China.
Deputy Director Xinmin LI, Inspector of the Pollution Control Department of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of the People's Republic of China, Professor Gang YU, Director of the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering of Tsinghua University, and Mr. Hao QUAN, director of the Solid Waste Branch of the Chinese Society For Environmental Science, addressed the opening ceremony of the conference. Twenty-one well-known experts and scholars at home and abroad, including Mr. Kexiong DU, official of the Pollution Prevention and Control Department of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of the People's Republic of China, Professor Yongfeng NIE of the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering of Tsinghua University, and Professor Fumikazu Yoshida of Hokkaido University, respectively, delivered keynote reports on solid waste management and treatment technology, electronic waste and biomass waste management and treatment technology.
The conference received a total of 70 abstracts, 42 papers and 53 published reports. More than 145 representatives from domestic and foreign universities, government departments, research institutes and industry attended the conference. In addition, in view of the outstanding problems of China's electronic waste and hazardous waste management and disposal, the conference also specially arranged the "Waste Electrical and Electronic Products (WEEE) management Policy", "Hazardous Waste Treatment Industry Development Forum" and "Electronic Waste Treatment Industry Development Forum". It provides a platform for extensive exchanges and cooperation between domestic and foreign officials, experts and industry in the field of solid waste management and science and technology.
After the conference, the Basel Convention Coordinating Centre for Asia and the Pacific collated and published the proceedings.
