Hong Chen Associate Professor

Dr. Hong Chen is a tenured Associate Professor at the School of Environmental Science and Engineering, Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech). He earned his Ph.D. from Stockholm University in 2014, followed by postdoctoral research at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stanford University, and UC Berkeley. His research focuses on green energy-driven resource recovery and environmental pollution control. Specifically, his work advances critical metal recovery and pollution control from complex solid wastes, industrial wastewater, and seawater through innovative photo- and electrochemical approaches. He has published 170 peer-reviewed papers in leading journals such as PNAS, Nature Communications, and Science Advances, garnering over 13,224 citations (h-index: 63), alongside over 30 patents. His contributions are recognized by numerous awards, including the ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering Lectureship Award, the Youth Environmental Chemistry Award from the Chinese Chemical Society, the Young Scientist Award from the Chinese Society for Environmental Sciences, and the Outstanding Youth Contribution Award in Circular Economy Technology Innovation from the China Nonferrous Metals Society. He serves as an Associate Editor for Environmental Chemistry Letters and holds several other editorial board positions. He is a regular reviewer for Nature and Nature-sub journals etc., and serving as a Committee Member of the Solid Waste Branch of the Chinese Society for Environmental Sciences, Council Member of the Mineral Physics & Structure Committee of the Chinese Society for Mineralogy, Petrology and Geochemistry, Youth Committee Member of the Chinese Society of Soil Science, and Expert Consultant for the Basel Convention Asia-Pacific Regional Centre on Chemicals and Waste Management.
