At the opening ceremony, speeches were delivered by Mr. Xinmin Li, Inspector of the Pollution Control Department of the Ministry of Environmental Protection; Ms. Katarina Kummer Perry, Executive Secretary of the Secretariat of the Basel Convention; Academician Jiming Hao, Dean of the Institute of Environmental Science and Engineering of Tsinghua University; and Mr. Quan Hao, Director of the Society of Solid Waste of the Chinese Society for Environmental Sciences. Additionally, 43 renowned experts and scholars from both domestic and international institutions, including Mr. Keio Du, an official of the Solid Waste Management Division of the Pollution Prevention and Control Department of the Ministry of Environmental Protection, and Professor Fumikazu Yoshida of Hokkaido University, Japan, respectively, delivered keynote speeches on solid waste management and treatment technology, as well as the management and treatment of electronic and biomass waste.
The conference covered four main thematic areas: e-waste, hazardous waste, municipal sludge and domestic waste treatment and disposal management technology. In order to promote the research and exchange of solid waste management technology and policy in the Asia-Pacific region, the conference also arranged several key sessions, including "Keynote Report on the trend of solid waste management policy in Asia", "Regional-Level E-Waste Projects and Topic Research", "Development of China's e-waste treatment technology" and " Development Trends in China’s e-waste treatment and disposal industry". In addition, specialized sessions such as the "Workshop on Capacity Building and Awareness Raising for the Safe Management of Asbestos Waste in the Asia-Pacific Region and the “China-U.S. Environmental Cooperation Forum on Solid Waste Treatment and Disposal“ provided a broad platform for officials, experts, and industry professionals in the field of solid waste management and technology to exchange ideas and foster collaboration. The proceedings of this conference were indexed by ISTP, one of the three academic indexing services, and a total of 155 papers were received and 62 reports were published. An additional exhibition segment was introduced, featuring nine well-known domestic and international companies specializing in e-waste and hazardous waste treatment. The conference's corporate site visit program offered participants the opportunity to exchange and learn about technical practices and management experiences in e-waste and hazardous waste treatment enterprises. Professor Hongtao Wang and Associate Researcher Wenjing Lu from the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering participated in the conference as presenters and session hosts. More than 40 students from the department participated in the conference and submitted 18 papers.
