ICWMT14 Was Successfully Held

The 14th International Conference on Waste Management and Technology was grandly opened at the Four Seasons Yuyuan International Hotel in Beijing on March 22, 2019. More than 400 delegates from more than 20 countries and regions attended the conference.

The conference was organized by Tsinghua University, the Center for Solid Waste and Chemicals Management of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, the United Nations Environment Programme, the Stockholm Convention Regional Centre for Capacity-Building and Transfer of Technology in Asia and the Pacific, and co-hosted by the the Basel Convention Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific, the Society of Solid Waste of the Chinese Society for Environmental Sciences, and the Institute of Soil and Solid Waste of the Chinese Academy of Environmental Sciences. The United Nations Centre for Regional Development (UNCRD), the journal Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering, and the journal Waste Management & Research provided support for the conference.

Qiang Zhou, Deputy Inspector of Department of Solid Wastes and Chemicals, Ministry of Ecology and Environment, and Ruihe Tu, Representative of United Nations Environment Programme in China, delivered opening remarks. Mr. Carlos Martin-Novella, Deputy Executive Secretary of the Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions, sent a congratulatory video.

Wenchao Zang, Deputy Director of the Solid Waste and Chemicals Management Technology Center of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment hosted the keynote speech session. Academician Xiangwan Du from the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Deputy Director Xiaolong Liu from the Centre for Strategic Studiesr of the Chinese Academy of Engineering shared the process of China transitioning from a "Zero-waste City" to a " Zero-waste Society." Professor Julie Beth Zimmerman from Yale University delivered a presentation titled "Evaluative Design: Water, Energy, and Chemicals." Professor Evangelos Gidarakos from the Technical University of Crete in Greece shared his work experience in waste management and the circular economy.

The conference will last until March 24, and more than 80 domestic and foreign government officials, experts and scholars will make presentations on issues such as “Zero-waste City” management and practice, waste plastic and marine waste management, e-waste recycling and pollution control, regional waste and chemical management laws and regulations, typical waste treatment and disposal technologies, and solid waste management strategies and approaches.
The conference set up the main venue and 8 sub-forums, Including the "Basel Convention Regional Centre for Asia and Pacific Steering Committee meeting", "New Energy Vehicle waste power Battery Recycling Seminar", "Electronic waste Management and Technology Frontier Forum", "Asia-Pacific typical countries waste lead-acid battery environmental harmless management and priority activities Identification seminar", "Waste plastics Management Seminar", "Circular Economy Institute Center Leaders meeting", "Zero-waste City Construction Seminar", "Young Scholars/Graduate Students Forum".
The conference coincided with the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and Their Disposal (referred to as the Basel Convention), and a grand celebration ceremony was held. The overall objective of the Basel Convention is to protect human health and the environment from the adverse effects of the generation, transboundary movement and disposal of hazardous wastes and other wastes. The Convention was adopted on March 22, 1989, came into effect on May 5, 1992. Currently, there are 187 parties to the convention, including China.
Since its inception in 2005, ICWMT has adhered to the goal of creating a relaxed and free academic exchange platform. It is dedicated to providing a venue for experts, scholars, and industry professionals in the field of solid waste management and disposal technology to articulate scientific concepts, showcase advanced experiences, and seek solutions. Over the past ten years, ICWMT has gained increasing recognition worldwide and has played an increasingly important role in academic exchanges within the field of solid waste.
