Varenyam Achal

Professor
Achal Varenyam is Professor of Environmental Engineering and Deputy Dean of Undergraduate Studies at Guangdong Technion–Israel Institute of Technology (GTIIT), Shantou, with an adjunct appointment at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa. He leads the Laboratory of Environmental Sustainability, focusing on microbial-based technologies for sustainable construction materials, heavy metal remediation, and soil health improvement. His research on microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP), waste-to-resource strategies, and low-carbon infrastructure has resulted in more than 150 publications, over 10,000 citations, and recognition among the world’s top 2% most-cited scientists. He serves on editorial boards of several international journals in environmental biotechnology and sustainable materials. Alongside research, he is deeply engaged in innovative teaching, curriculum development, and mentoring of young researchers. Increasingly, his work bridges academia and industry through start-up activities aimed at commercializing bio-based solutions for greener construction, safer soils, and a more circular bioeconomy.
